Seven and a half years ago, I made the :ugh: emote.

The idea of how of making each pixel of movement take several frames occurred to me, and I happened to have Photoshop at the time to make it work. I still like how it turned out, although I could've done better.

Every time someone uses it, I get a notification containing their comment or journal entry. Usually, I read them.

:ugh: shows frustration, or annoyance, or whatever makes people go "ugh." The things using it, therefore, are generally written by unhappy people.

Sometimes, I empathize with those people. Usually, I choose to appreciate that we have a society that allows people to be unhappy about, say, having to sit in class next to the girl whom this person saw looking at the boy this person likes even though she says she has a crush on someone else and this person can't stand how fake she is, instead of laughing at the pettiness of people's displeasure.

Luckily, I also made heckachoppa which sees a fair amount of use, though not quite as much. It is happy and delightful, so I get to see what makes people want to express happiness and delight.

Is it weird that I spy on people for using something I made?

Imperfection

8 min read
After a five year hiatus from the genre, I have created my first fractal art "series," entitled Imperfection. The series is unified thematically by a focus on asymmetry, often slight, using a strict grayscale palette to highlight the variety of forms present both between and within pieces. Perhaps as somewhat of a reflection on the notion of imperfection, I won't be rendering every fractal in the series; some were a bit too imperfect. For each piece, there is a large 3:2 render that will be available as a print so I can decorate my apartment and a 1920x1080 detail that is suitable to be a desktop background.

In terms of technique, each work in the series was created using a single transform. However, each is a different style of single-transform flame, using different variations. Every one is a raw fractal, rendered directly onto a white background with no post-processing.

On Love

1 min read
I love all of the people who are sources of the 109 activity messages in my message center. I promised myself a long time ago that were I ever to be awarded a DD, I would take the time to thank everyone who favd it. Then I learned what it's like to log on one day and find nearly two hundred messages that aren't just glance-and-forget deviations.

(Mediocre excuse: check.)

Speaking of which, I love the literature community here. I always thought a DD would remain forever above me. I guess this shows that with persistence and practice, even someone who gets three hours of spare time each day can reach his goals.

(Cliché statement: check.)

And then there is love.

.user.js

I wrote a Greasemonkey user script that takes all those links to the ancient deviantART "Outgoing Link" page and makes them just open the damn link in a new tab because that extra page is annoying and unnecessary. The script doesn't work on links in previews and freshly-added comments because I don't feel like reading through all of deviantART's scripts to figure out what sets that text so I can hijack it; it just cleans all URLs once when the page is loaded.

If you want to use it, go to zephyrtronium.us/p/js/da-outgo… with Greasemonkey installed in your Firefox/Chrome.

The original reason why I learned enough js to write this script was that I was thinking it would be neat to write a small dynamic forum/message board using AJAX. Anyone happen to have any resources on stuff like this, especially security concerns involved?

I got the highest score that can be obtained on the ASVAB. My recruiter says I am his second candidate to do so, and his first held two master's degrees.
